But the Friday night head to head clash saw both shows suffer some seriously low viewing figures.
Strictly came out on top with an average audience of 6.5 million, its lowest ever Friday show since it began back in 2009.
It was over a million viewers down on last year's figure of 7.8 million viewers, no doubt mainly as a result of the X Factor's extra show.
Strictly peaked with 6.8 million viewers as the first six of this year's fifteen celebrity contestants performed live for the judges.
The X Factor ratings PLUNGED from their usual weekend numbers with just 5.8 million viewers watching, making it one of the lowest ever episodes of X Factor in history, perhaps even since the very first series.
Of course the X Factor's Friday show was its first ever and airing out of place was never going to get huge numbers.
Speaking earlier this month, X Factor boss Simon Cowell described the new format - which will also be used next Friday - as an "experiment" by ITV.
Let's just hope that the rating doesn't hurt the show going forward into this evening and Sunday's usual episodes.
Strictly continues on BBC One tonight at 7PM while The X Factor 2014 airs from 8PM on ITV.
