7.8 million watched the Strictly Come Dancing Xmas special last night, one of the biggest ratings on Christmas day.

The show beat usual ratings Goliaths such as Downtown Abbey and Call The Midwife, which went head to head on ITV1 and BBC One later on in the evening respectively.

Strictly averaged 7.76 million viewers, ahead of Doctor Who's 7.59 million.

The winners of the night were, as usual, the soaps. Eastenders was the most watched show with 9.4 million viewers, while Corrie had 8.6 million on ITV1.

Downtown achieved 6.8 million while Call The Midwife had 7.3 million, both of the show's lowest overnight ratings ever.

All around it was a disappointing day for viewing figures, with a new episode of The Royle Family grabbing 7.68m in the late evening slot on BBC One.
