The first half of The X Factor 2012 last night failed to get even close to beating Strictly Come Dancing in the ratings.

Despite last night's episode being the climax of the series to date, the ITV1 series was more than a million viewers behind Strictly.

The two hour show between 8PM and 10PM, which saw Christopher Maloney leave in third spot, was watched by an average audience of 9.3 million viewers.

On the plus side, it was up over a million viewers on last week's semi-final instalment, but it was easily one of the least watched finals to date.

Despite performances from Kylie Minogue, Kelly Clarkson, Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger and Rita Ora, as well as the finalists, the show was down over a million viewers on last year's final.

The X Factor 2012 final is in fact the lowest rated since 2005, down over 5 million on the show's peak two years ago.

The Strictly Come Dancing quarter finals meanwhile jumped to a series high of 10.75 million viewers, as the final six performed dance fusions.

The X Factor 2012 continues tonight with the live final results in Manchester from 7:40PM on ITV1.

Jahmene Douglas and James Arthur will be battling it out to be crowned winner, while there will be performances from One Direction, Rhianna and Emeli Sande.

Meanwhile Strictly Come Dancing 2012 continues with the latest results show on Sunday 9th December at 7.20pm on BBC One and BBC One HD.

Two more acts will be in the dance off with one going home, while there will be a festive themed performance from Michael Buble.
