It was the first time that both shows went live and aired on the same night, with Strictly Come Dancing pulling in a peak audience of 10.2 million to The X Factor's 9.9 million.
On average, The X Factor slightly lost out, with 8.7 million viewers watching between 8PM and 10:20PM to Srictly's 8.7 million between 6:30PM and 7:45PM.
However, while Strictly had improved by over a million viewers on last year's equivalent figures, The X Factor is down almost two million.
With ITV1+1 catch up viewers added, The X Factor averaged 9.2 million for its marathon first live show, peaking with 10.3 million viewers.
The X Factor 2012 live shows continue tonight on ITV1 at 8PM with the first results show, featuring performances from Ne-Yo and Leona Lewis.
Strictly Come Dancing 2012 continues next Saturday night on BBC One, with all of the celebs performing their second dance. The first results show will follow on Sunday, with one celeb getting the boot!
