The X Factor managed to edge out Strictly Come Dancing last night, as the two Saturday night reality shows aired together for the first time.

Fortunately for us viewers, there was no clash between the two programmes, allowing for them both to reach some big audiences.

The X Factor saw a big improvement on last week, climbing almost a million viewers to average 8.6 million.

Strictly Come Dancing on the other hand averaged a still impressive 8 million for its pre-recorded launch show between 6:30PM and 7:35PM.

Strictly however peaked with a strong 9.8 million viewers, the highest launch show ever, while The X Factor peaked with 9.5 million.

With ITV1+1 viewers, The X Factor's average climbed to 9 million and a peak of 10 million, its highest audience this series.

The X Factor 2012 continues tonight with its final audition round, before moving on to the bootcamp stage of the contest next weekend.

Strictly Come Dancing meanwhile will take a break until next month, when the live shows will start on October 5.
