Show Me The Funny: Stuart plays it safe in the final gig before Thursday's live final

Stuart Goldsmith

It's the last chance for the remaining Show Me The Funny comics to convince the judges they've got it takes to perform live at the Hammersmith Apollo in tonight's show. Pat, Tiffany, Ellie, Dan and Stuart travel to Blackpool for their final task, with Jason Manford asking them to write a 10 minute set.

They each have 48 hours around town to gather inspiration before taking to the stage, with the judges expecting a mix of tried and test material as well as newly written gags.

Helping regular panellists Alan Davies and Kate Copstick on tonight's show is legendary comedy double act, Cannon & Ball.

And after last week’s advice from Johnny Vegas about steering clear of ‘safe’ material, Stuart toys with the idea of trying out edgier jokes.

He says: “I like to go to fetish clubs and I’ve got this great material about being in a fetish club and snogging a bloke in a wheelchair with no legs. Maybe this is the perfect time in the competition to say: Oh by the way I’m filthy.”

But as the gig draws nearer, the frequently inoffensive Stuart grows wary of changing his approach and decides: “I’m not going to go darker for the sake of going darker.”

Will he regret his decision or will the clean-cut comic prove his worth?

Meanwhile, after last week’s disastrous gig in his homeland, Dan admits: “Last week was a tough one, I left the stage with a lump in my throat.”

But back on stage, Dan seems to rediscover his groove with a steady stream of belly laughs from the audience. With all the comics delivering near-flawless performances, will Dan’s self deprecating gags be enough to seal his place in the live final?

Show Me The Funny continues tonight at 9PM on ITV1. The live final airs on August 25th at 9PM.
