ITV1's new comedy talent show Show Me The Funny kicks off tonight and there's arguments already between the hopeful comics as they're sent on their first task. Show host Jason Manford tells the comedians to explore the city of Liverpool for inspiration for their gig in the city.
The 10 contestants will have to write five new minutes of material to perform to a room full of local Liverpudlian women the next evening.
As the two oldest contestants, Alfie and Rudi, head off to a local beauty salon, Tiffany and Essex hit the dizzy heights of Liverpool’s tallest bar, while Stuart and Dan search for women called Michelle and Ignacio and Prince go in search of landmarks… but things are far from harmonious between experienced comics Cole and Patrick, despite it only being the first week.
With Patrick giving out free hugs, an annoyed Cole remarks: “It’s like being out with some excited toddler.” He implores the seasoned warm-up act to stop hugging strangers, but Patrick’s hands on approach shows no sign of waning and continues into the next day.
Still stuck in their pairs, Cole fumes: “Yesterday I was going to drown Pat in the Mersey. You’ll see on stage we don’t do things similarly. My jokes have got thought, judgment, reasoning and research. Pat talks about balloons and biscuits… He’s for the old women and the kids. I’m for people who have read a book.”
Tensions continue to mount between the two before Cole eventually storms off while Patrick heckles: “Cole’s getting upset. Let’s be adults, you can’t just run off! This is what I’ve got to work with, someone who thinks I’m a child. He’s an idiot!”
Show Me The Funny starts tonight at 9PM on ITV1.
