Gary Barlow bans novelty acts from Let It Shine... in case they win

Gary Barlow has banned novelty acts from Let It Shine - in case they win.

The former X Factor judge revealed he didn't want to risk having a joke act winning the show and being cast in his musical.

Let It Shine is on the hunt for five guys to play the role of a boy band in a new musical featuring the music of Take That.

And Gary wants the series to be taken seriously, saying of 'joke acts': "Listen, those kind of acts are loved by the audience so we could have ended up with someone in the stage show who shouldn’t be in the show and we’re stuck with them for 12 months touring around the country.

"So I didn’t want to take that risk, there’s no room for that. We wanted talent from the word go."

And in a swipe at The X Factor, Gary promised there would be a real prize for those who won his show.

He said: "As a judge, to be sat there promising these young kids they’re going to be a star or whatever, I don’t even know what that means anymore.

"So to give them a job is something everyone can understand. This isn’t an easy job either. The contract is for 12 months, eight shows a week."

Speaking about the show itself, Gary continued: "I think the underlying thing for me is we are looking for five young men to work as a team. Having young kids, in this day and age children aren’t socialising like they did years ago.

"I don’t think they are working as teams like they did. I’m looking at my kids and their friends and they are very insular, they are on their phones or Playstation, they are not working as a team.

"So I think this show will remind people of not only the strength of working as a team, the challenge of working as a team but also the feeling of success as a team."

Let It Shine airs Saturday night on BBC One from 7PM.
