It was a series high and the most watched show of the day, pushing the Great British Bake Off into second place.

An average of 5.8 million viewers tuned in for pastry week of the now Channel 4 show, as another baker left the Bake Off tent last night.

The show remains quite a bit down compared to its recent series on BBC One, but is still outdoing everything else on TV and providing Channel 4 with mega numbers.

Last night's most recent instalment was the second most watched show of the day, beating ITV's Emmerdale (5.7 million) and EastEnders (5.6 million).

Once catch up viewers are included, the average rises to more than 9 million viewers across the first three episodes for which data is currently available.

C4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt previously said the show would break even with just 3 million viewers so the channel is sure to be over the moon with the viewing figures so far.

Elsewhere in last night's TV ratings, ITV slumped to fewer than a million viewers at 9PM as it began a re-run of 2014 drama miniseries Cilla, starring Sheridan Smith.
