Dancing On Ice axe stings ITV as its new shows flop in ratings

A year on from Dancing On Ice's axe and ITV may well be regretting it.

The channel last month experienced one of its worst ratings slumps ever with January's viewing figures the worst on record, the Guardian reports.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's celebrity show Dancing On Ice was axed last year after nine series to make way for new programmes.

ITV boss Peter Fincham said in a statement at the time: “It is always a difficult decision to say goodbye to successful and long running shows but with change comes opportunity and the chance for us to bring in new and exciting programmes for our viewers."

However those "new and exciting" shows have flopped in ratings.

Harry Hill's rebooted Stars In Their Eyes and Stephen Mulhern's BGT-meets-celebs talent contest Get Your Act Together have been getting just 2 million viewers at the weekend.

But at least those shows actually made it to their air; ITV had originally planned new music contest Rising Star as its new big Saturday night feature for 2015 but it was pulled from screens before filming had even begun.

The good news for ITV is that their ratings winners Ant and Dec are back next weekend with a brand new series of Saturday Night Takeaway.
