The singer is tipped to win the all star series this year but admitted many viewers were still focusing on his stint on the ITV series which now happened more than six years ago.
Ray - who shed over two stone to take part in Dancing On Ice this year - said: “I don’t see myself as a sex symbol. I'm a bit like Marmite!
"I've had so many tweets from people lovely things and then I've had others saying it's a bit awkward. Some people still see me as that little kid off X Factor.”
Ray added: "I'm a man now, with a wife and baby. It's been seven years since X Factor!"
Meanwhile Ray admitted that one of his reasons for singing up for this year's all stars sow was to get himself back into shape.
"I'd been unfit for quite a while and didn't feel as good as I should," he told Star magazine. "On holiday last year I looked at the pictures and in one I looked like a whale!
"I was eating anything I anted at any time I wanted. I had to just stop and I did. It too eight weeks to see results.
"Training for DOI helped and I've been eating clean with my nutritional plan. "
