Daredevil escapologist Matt Johnson shocked the Britain's Got Talent judges in tonight's show.

Saturday night saw the brand new series kick off and it does so with a true variety act.

We meet 43-year-old Matt Johnson who is originally from Rotherham but is currently living in Canada.

Matt performed an escapology trick, whilst locked and chained inside a tank filled with water.

Before his act, he told the judges: "I will go underwater, the lid will be closed and padlocked shut. A chain will go around my neck, my hands will be handcuffed."

Saying he had only about 90 seconds of air, Matt added: "If I start floating and I pass out... then you get me out."

As the time passed the 1 minute 30 second mark, Matt was still left trapped.

In the end, the timer got up to 2 minutes before Matt finally managed to free himself.

"That was unbelievable," said Simon Cowell, "Respect Matt."

David Walliams agreed: "Huge respect for risking your life for our entertainment."

And Amanda Holden applauded Matt for his bravery, before she and the other judges gave him a yes into the next round.

Other acts on tonight's episode of Britain's Got Talent included circus performer Sascha Williams who performed a Rola Bola acrobatic act.

We also met 10-year-old singer Calum Courtney and DVJ aka Diversity Junior, a dance group guided by Diversity’s Ashley Banjo.

Over the past few months, the judges and presenters have travelled the length and breadth of the country seeking out the weird and the wacky, the wonderful and the inspirational. Once again, all four judges and Ant & Dec have had the opportunity to give the act they think has that extra special something an automatic place in the live semi-finals with the use of the Golden Buzzer.

With thousands of applicants, viewers can expect to be amazed and astounded by the impressive line-up of acts competing to be crowned this year’s winner.

The lucky act who captures the heart and imagination of the British public will secure themselves an incredible £250,000 and the opportunity to perform at the Royal Variety Performance 2018.

Britain’s Got Talent airs Saturday nights on ITV.
