New Ant and Dec TV show will air this year after being cancelled in 2018

Ant and Dec's latest TV project will air in 2019, it has been revealed.

An ITV special following the pair as they traced their roots was said to have been pulled from screens in 2018.

First announced in 2017, Ant & Dec's DNA Journey will allow viewers to watch the Geordie duo as they researched their histories and ancestries.

"Tracing our ancestors using pioneering DNA methods has been a fascinating and emotional process so far," Ant & Dec said at the time.

They revealed: "We have discovered some amazing things which have shocked and surprised us and we still have hundreds of years to uncover! We are looking forward to sharing our journey with the audience."

However following Ant stepping down from his TV work and returning to rehab, the show was dropped for the foreseeable future.

A source told the Daily Star last Spring: "It’s really touch and go as to whether this show ever sees the light of day now."

However ITV has confirmed the show will be broadcast later in 2019.

ITV’s director of television Kevin Lygo said: “We had to stop filming as they hadn’t quite finished it, but I’ve seen the first part and it’s absolutely brilliant.

“They’ve got a bit of filming to do to finish it and it should go out late in the autumn — it will be a big thing.

“We test their DNA and they go back and find relatives they didn’t know about. The DNA profiling is so accurate and detailed.”

He added: “I mean, it’s not Genghis Khan — there’s a village in Ireland where you have relatives just two generations back.

“Ant and Dec are brilliant together and they don’t know the story so it’s revealed as it happens. They go into a room with relatives they’ve never seen.”

The news comes after Ant returned to Britain's Got Talent, filming auditions for the new series in London.

However his ant Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway has been rested for the year, returning to screens in 2020.
