8.5 million viewers tuned in to last night's first Britain's Got Talent 2017 live semi-final.

A peak audience of 9.6 million viewers watched the performances yesterday evening as the first set of eight acts competed for two places in the final.

The numbers are down slightly on last year's first semi-final, which aired on a Sunday, but well up on 2016's equivalent Monday show.

BGT's separate results show saw 6.5 million viewers from 9:30PM, with a peak audience of 7.3 million as the top two acts were announced.

Coronation Street aired between the two BGT instalments at 9PM, averaging 7.3 million viewers for the first episode of its dramatic week.

Earlier in the evening on ITV, Emmerdale had 5.7 million viewers while over on BBC One, EastEnders had 4 million viewers as it went head to head with BGT.

Elsewhere, BBC Two saw 2.5 million viewers for its Crossrail doc The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway and 2.4 million for Springwatch's return.

Meanwhile, an election debate between May v Corbyn saw an average audience of 2.8 million viewers on Channel 4 while 400,000 watched on Sky News.

The Chase returns strong

In the afternoon on ITV, The Chase made its comeback with 2.4 million viewers watching the first episode in four weeks.

The number is almost three times what Rylan Clark-Neal's Babushka finished on last Friday night, with fewer than 850,000 viewers watching the last episode of the new game show.
