Simon Cowell has revealed that he tried to get fellow Britain's Got Talent 2016 judges Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon on the American version of the show.

Following the news that Simon has considered transferring the BGT panel to sister show The X Factor, today he let slip on ITV's Lorraine that he's also attempted to win the girls roles on America's Got Talent.

However, he suggested that its broadcaster NBC vetoed the move, as they're pretty much unknown across the pond. "I tried, I tried. I did!" he told journalist Dan Wootton.

Alesha didn't buy his story, responding: "Liar! You did not try! You’re a liar!"

"They’ve never heard of you. I’ve tried my best, I did!" insisted Simon.

"I’ve had a hit in America thank you!" Alesha joked - presumably referring to her band Mis-Teeq's biggest smash 'Scandalous', which charted at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004.

Although Simon didn't manage to get the girls lucrative Stateside exposure, he has arranged for a consolation gift.

"What I have got for you, can I reveal something exclusively? I’ve got you two tickets to the (America's Got Talent) final," he said.

"Oh thank you so much, I’ll book my flight tonight!" Alesha quipped.

Simon's last attempt to take one of his British judges to the States ended in disaster. Cheryl Fernandez-Versini was dropped from The X Factor USA in 2011 amid rumours that bosses thought viewers wouldn't understand her Geordie accent - although she later received positive reviews from critics.

While Amanda and Alesha may be stuck here in Blighty, it was confirmed earlier this year that Simon is joining America's Got Talent himself later this year for its eleventh season.

Britain's Got Talent returns to ITV tomorrow night at 7.00pm.
