Britain's Got Talent 2014: Simon Cowell says fatherhood won't make him softer

Simon Cowell has insisted that his newborn son Eric will not make him softer towards contestants on Britain's Got Talent.

Despite previously claiming he lacked the 'patience' to have kids, the media mogul became a father for the first time in February, interrupting production of the talent contest so he could attend the birth in New York.

But although we've seen another side to Simon in recent weeks, he's vowed to maintain his high standards when it comes to judging hopefuls on his shows.

"I've always liked kids, so we've always been kind to the kids on the show," the 54-year-old said at a press conference on Wednesday. "But if someone's useless I'm not gonna suddenly go 'you're fantastic' because I've had a baby."

Simon added that his beloved pups Squiddly and Diddly helped to prepare him for fatherhood.

"My dogs got me warmed up for that," he revealed. "I learned compassion from them."

Simon's comments came after he decided to lower the age limit on BGT's sister show The X Factor to fourteen for the first time since 2008.

Britain's Got Talent returns for its eighth series this Saturday at 7.15pm on ITV.
