An average audience of more than 5 million viewers tuned into the live launch of Celebrity Big Brother 2011 on Channel 5 last night, making it one of the most watched shows on the channel in its history. 5.1 million watched as Brian Dowling introduced the celebs from 9PM.
The audience peaked at 10PM with 5.6 million viewers tuning in, making the Channel's most watched non-sporting programme ever to air in its 14-year history. It also smashed the slot average for the channel, which previously stood at 1.29m viewers for the year to date.
And younger viewers seemed to love the line up, with Channel 5 beating both ITV1 and Channel 4 yesterday in the teenage demographic.
But the show didn't manage to out-do Channel 4, with last year's Celebrity show launching with an average of 5.9 million viewers.
New spin-off show, Big Brother's Bit On The Side, hosted by former Little Brother presenter Emma Willis, was watched by 1.8 million between 10:30PM and 11:30PM.
Celebrity Big Brother 2011 continues tonight at 9PM on Channel 5.
