80s pop icon Steve Strange for Celebrity Big Brother 2011?

Big Brother 2011 auditions

Bisexual popstar Steve Strange is reportedly wanted by Channel 5 bosses for next month's Celebrity Big Brother. According to the Daily Star today, execs have a series of meetings with the 80s pop icon and want him to sign up for the show.

The newspaper claims that Big Brother bosses reckon Strange will make an "excellent housemate" thanks to his murky past as an ex Heroin junkie and shoplifter, as well as suffering from mental problems after his pop career collapsed in the 90s.

The singer – real name Steven John Harrington – was given a suspended jail sentence in 2000 for shoplifting, including pinching a Teletubby doll from a shop in Bridgend.

Since then however his career has been getting back on track, with appearances on reality show Celebrity Scissorhands and BBC One drama Ashes To Ashes.

Steve said: “I promise you that as entertainment value I won’t let you down.”

A pal told the tabloid today: “He’s got so many amazing stories from his past he’d be TV gold.”

Celebrity Big Brother launches on August 18 on Channel 5.
