Emma Willis hopeful Big Brother won't be axed by Channel 5 next year

Emma Willis is hopeful that Channel 5 won't drop Big Brother at the end of 2018.

Next year marks the end of Channel 5's current contract with Big Brother programme makers Endemol.

2015 saw the start of a new three year deal following a successful move from Channel 4 in 2011.

Under the terms of the deal, Channel 5 continues to broadcast two series of Celebrity Big Brother and one series of Big Brother each year, as well as its spin-off Bit On The Side.

Paul Dunthorne, Channel 5’s Chief Operating Officer, said at the time: “Big Brother in all its guises brings a huge and varied cross section of viewers to Channel 5 and typifies the appointment-to-view programming we want on the channel.

"It remains one of TV’s most talked about and popular programmes and I’m genuinely delighted we’ve secured it for at least three more years.”

However ratings for the show in recent years have slipped with the latest 'civilian' run dropping to fewer than a million viewers, based on overnight data.

Despite falling figures, main show host Emma Willis is hopeful of a renewal until at least 2020 to mark a landmark two decades on TV.

“I hope it’s got legs. I’ve been obsessed with it since it began in 2000, but everything has a shelf life," Emma told The Sun newspaper. “Hopefully it will go for a little while longer.

"It would be nice for it to at least make 20 years.”

The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother begins Tuesday night at 9PM on Channel 5.
