Love Island overtakes Big Brother in the ratings

Love Island 2016

Love Island has beaten reality TV rival Big Brother in the TV ratings for the first time.

The gap between the two shows has been getting closer and closer and last night the ITV2 series went ahead of the Channel 5 show.

Love Island returned to our screens last year after ten years away, ditching its old 'Celebrity' format in favour of a brand new look.

And it seems to have won over viewers with last night's episode recording a high of 1.1 million viewers, its best rating ever for the new look.

It beat Big Brother in the 9PM slot by 40,000 viewers (including +1 channels) as the latest highlights from the house dropped 100,000 viewers on last week.

Despite Love Island taking over and taking a dip week-on-week, Big Brother was still up on last year's equivalent viewing figures by 100,000.

Both shows continue tonight at 10PM.
