Love Island 2019 cast ‘to include more body-diverse contestants’

ITV is set to cast a more body-diverse range of contestants for Love Island 2019, according to a report.

The ITV2 dating contest has come under fire for its stereotypical choice of islanders, focusing on six-packs and slim waists.

However, the upcoming fifth series could shatter that Instagram-perfect image.

One of the names on the new cast could be plus-size model Jada Sezer.

“Previous years have been criticised for a lack of diversity among contestants,” a source told the Daily Mirror newspaper this week. “This year producers are determined to have more variation among the Islanders.

“They want all shapes and sizes taking part – not just a stream of identikit young men and women.”

An insider claimed that Jada would be a “perfect choice because she is passionate about body positivity”.

The Daily Star previously claimed chiefs wanted more body types viewers could relate to.

“Over years there’s been quite a bit of criticism from viewers that it’s only guys with chiselled abs and rippling muscles and girls with slim toned bodies who are chosen for the show,” a source commented.

“They’ve gone back to see what it is the viewers want, and if there’s anything they can do to make it better.

“One thing that keeps coming up is the lack of body shape diversity. Viewers want to see girls and boys with bodies they can relate to.

“Sexy singles come in all shapes and sizes and this is what the viewers will see this year. It’s a really positive move.”

ITV said: “When casting for Love Island we always strive to reflect the age, experiences and diversity of our audience and this year is no exception with a cross section of different personalities and backgrounds in the villa.”

The new series of Love Island begins at 9PM on Monday, June 3.

The series will then air nightly at 9PM each week night and Sundays, with spin-off show After Sun at 10PM on Sunday nights.
