The pro dancer has been with the show since 2016 and is awaiting news about his fate this year.

He said today: “Thing is we’re all in the same situation. Like any contract we wait for that phone call. Obviously I want to be back.

“Hopefully that phone call does come. It’s all good.”

Appearing on ITV’s This Morning, AJ continued: “Obviously the show is fantastic and we love it and I’ll do it for many years as possible.

“The sad thing with Pasha leaving – we didn’t expect it. He made the decision to do it. He was quiet. It’s losing a member of the Strictly family.”

Pasha announced last week he was leaving Strictly “to find a new challenge” as bosses determine which dancers will be signed up for 2019’s series.

He said in a statement on social media: “After scoring 93 perfect tens, reaching 4 finals and lifting 1 glitter ball, it’s time for me to find a new challenge and so I’ve decided to make last year – my final season on Strictly.

“I’ve had 8 fantastic years, full of wonderful memories, thanks to the incredible partners, professionals and myriad of behind the scenes teams who all work to make Strictly the amazing production that it is.

“The biggest thanks go to all the members of the public who’ve supported me so much over these years – I look forward to seeing you on the Strictly Pro-Tour this spring, and for many future adventures to come!”

Meanwhile, AJ revealed his dream celebrity for Strictly.

“Obviously up there at number one is The Queen, a beautiful waltz, that’s all I need to do, that would be the dream. Perfect,” he said.
