The Greatest Dancer isn’t “malicious” to its contestants, says Matthew Morrison

Glee star says he wouldn't be on the show if its format wasn't positive

Simon Cowell’s new show The Greatest Dancer has a positive format and isn’t “malicious” for contestants, according to ‘dance captain’ Matthew Morrison.

Cowell’s signature talent contest The X Factor is known for its rivalry between judges as well as the acts they mentor.

However, his venture in to the world of dance seemingly has more in common with its arch rival, The Voice.

Similarly to The Voice’s ‘coaches’, The Greatest Dancer’s celebrity panellists aren’t referred to as judges.

Instead, they’re known as ‘dance captains’, and their role is to help performers perfect their craft rather than make a big deal out of their shortcomings.

One of those captains, Matthew Morrison, told The Sun’s Fabulous magazine that he wouldn’t have signed up for the show if it had a “malicious” format.

“This is not the type of show I would have wanted to do in the past because I don’t think art should be judged,” he explained.

“But I think my role is to give constructive criticism, to give them the tools to grow and excel in their craft.”

“It’s not a malicious show at all – I wouldn’t do it if it was.”

Matthew is joined on the panel by pop sensation Cheryl and Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse.

The former Glee star reckons Oti’s new role will win her a horde of new fans.

“People will know Oti from Strictly Come Dancing – now they’re going to see her not just as a dancer, but as a personality,” he smiled.

“Oh my gosh! She’s so funny and full of energy. I’m sitting right between these two powerhouse women and I love it.”

The Greatest Dancer is presented by Britain’s Got Talent star Alesha Dixon and Diversity member Jordan Banjo.

Contestants initially perform behind a giant mirror, and if more than 75% of the studio audience vote for them, the mirror opens up to reveal them on stage.

Watch the first episode of The Greatest Dancer on Saturday at 8.00pm on BBC One.
