Budding comedian Martin Westgate made the Britain’s Got Talent 2018 judges chuckle with cheeky digs at David Walliams – before flopping with a string of cringey jokes.
Martin appeared on tonight’s edition of the ITV talent contest hoping to impress funnyman David.
“I think to get a thumbs up from David would mean a lot, but also Simon, because he’s the head honcho,” he commented.
He got off to a good start, earning some laughs by poking fun at the Little Britain star’s trademark sexual ambiguity.
When asked his age, Martin replied: “I’m 25. Too old for you, or is that alright?”
David then wanted to know about his time in the Merchant Navy, wondering: “How did you find being on the boat with all those sailors?”
“I didn’t enjoy it as much as I imagine you would enjoy it,” he quipped.
Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when Martin – now a retail worker – began his routine proper with a joke about a certain ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ singer.
“I had dinner with Rick Astley recently,” he said. “I say Rick Astley: he palmed me off on to his manager, did a lap around the restaurant, and threw cake in my face.
“Apparently he will give you up, let you down, run around and dessert you.”
There were only a few awkward chuckles from the audience, but he pressed on with a pun about the Household Cavalry.
“I had dinner at Buckingham Palace the other day, it was a roast dinner with the soldiers,” he continued. It was a Household Carvery, you could say.”
However, Martin ended up saving his cringiest gag for last.
“I was recently in the capital of Sweden,” he said. “I fell in love with the place, I didn’t wanna leave. You could say I had Stockholm Syndrome.”
It was so groanworthy that the judges quickly hit their buzzers one-by-one, ending the performance.
“I was so rooting for you as well!” exclaimed a disappointed David.
“It’s never a good sign when people are laughing because the joke’s so bad!” remarked Alesha Dixon.
After Martin was sent home with four nos, David commented: “I was gutted for him.”
“It’s a shame, right? What a terrible joke that last one was!” added Alesha.
Britain’s Got Talent 2018 continues next Saturday at 8.00pm on ITV.
