Big Brother will see a creative renewal for this summer's latest - and potentially last - series.

Big Brother's 'civilian' show will be back on TV in the summer and promises to go back to its 'social experiment' roots.

The Sun reports that as part of a revamp, Paul Osborne is joining as creative director.

He was previously series editor and executive producer on Big Brother between 2005 and 2008 when it aired on Channel 4.

“The series is Channel 5’s biggest rated show and everyone is working hard to ensure it returns with a bang in the summer," a source told The Sun newspaper.

“Paul is thrilled to be joining the team again and can’t wait to get his teeth back into recreating the true essence of Big Brother.”

A spokesperson for Big Brother makers Endemol Shine UK said: “As with any long-running series, creative leadership changes regularly.

“It’s great to have such an experienced and brilliant creative director working on the summer series.”

The upcoming summer series of Big Brother is the last of the current contract.

As yet, Channel 5 has not revealed if it will be renewing the show beyond 2018.

Channel boss Ben Frow said last year he wanted to see progress from the reality show, which has been on TV for the best part of 20 years now.

"We're going to have a discussion about it. I need to know, like I would with any commission, what are the plans for the future? How will it be creatively renewed? How is it still important to me?" he explained.

He added: "It's a very established brand, a very successful brand but there's a big shiny new show on the block called Love Island. We need to take a good long look at Big Brother and go what does it look like for the future?"

Frow said that he wanted Channel 5 shows that were "relevant for now" and "exciting for viewers".

"I don't think Big Brother just because it's a big brand should be any exception to the rule," he concluded.

Celebrity Big Brother will also return this summer.
