ITV have given The X Factor their full support despite declining ratings.

In fact, The X Factor is actually beating Strictly Come Dancing as far as the channel is concerned.

Although overnight viewing figures for this year's series have hit new lows, catch up numbers have increased and advertiser friendly young viewers are tuning in.

The ITV series has beaten Strictly in the 16-34 demographic for 8 of the 10 weekends they've been on air.

An ITV spokesperson told the Guardian newspaper: “We have a terrific final coming up this weekend, with some amazing talent.

"The X Factor ratings rise when consolidated viewing is factored in. The show performs well for younger audiences and it is an important part of ITV’s autumn schedule.”

As well as proving a hit with younger audiences, the show has had a huge impact on the charts.

Boy band Rak-Su, one of three finalists, have had 3 songs reach Number 1 on iTunes - all original tracks.

In all, 34 songs from The X Factor have made the Top 100 download chart with ten reaching the Top 10.

Speaking earlier this year, X Factor boss Simon Cowell said the show would no longer be able to compete directly with Saturday night rival Strictly.

He said: "We can’t compete with their overall audience because they’re much older. What’s important for us is to keep the young audience interested in the show.

“I’ve seen a couple of contestants this year who are really, really good. You’re always hoping to find the next star and that’s what I’m focusing on now.”

And brushing off concerns about the show's future, he told Music Week recently: "I remember the year Leona Lewis came on [2006] and when she did Summertime on the live show it was one of the best performances I've ever heard.

"If we can still find people like that - and the same goes with Got Talent as well - then we've got a long future.

"It's only when you don't put enough attention into the contestants that I think we have a problem."

The X Factor 2017 final airs Saturday and Sunday night on ITV.
