Fan favourite Flo Atkins has been sent home from The Great British Bake Off 2017 in bread week – while Steven Carter-Bailey relinquished his Star Baker title to Julia Chernogorova despite an impressive showstopper.
The latest episode, which judge Paul Hollywood described as the “best bread week I’ve ever seen”, began with a tea cake signature challenge.
A tricky technical then saw the bakers tackle cottage loaves, the dough for which had to be made by hand.
Kate came last in the ranking, with Prue Leith pointing out that her effort was “slightly wobbly” and had a “soggy middle”.
Julia placed second, and Stacey was thrilled after her “very good” loaf came out in first place.
Finally, the showstopper round involved coloured bread sculptures, featuring at least three different natural colourings.
Stacey lost momentum, with Paul saying her flavours were “wrong” – while Liam excelled at taste, but was told his “proving was a little bit under”.
Other disasters included Flo’s Davy Jones-themed bread, with both judges put off by the “overwhelming” taste of paprika.
Meanwhile, Paul burst out laughing at Julia’s ‘snail under a mushroom’ design, which came out a little, er, phallic.
But after calming down, he complimented her on its “fantastic taste” and “well thought through” design – while Prue noted its “lovely texture”.
Although he flopped in the prior challenges, two-time Star Baker Steven again won high praise for his ‘bag I knead’ handbag.
“I think that’s unbelievable. I mean, wow, wow, wow on the flavours,” Paul said. “That is ridiculous.”
The bread expert was so impressed that he took Steven’s place with the contestants, and sent him up to stand beside Prue.
Despite his “exceptional” showstopper, Steven failed to secure Star Baker a third week running, with Julia being awarded the title.
Appearing flabbergasted by the result, she reacted: “I did not expect that whatsoever.”
Meanwhile, Liam and Flo found themselves in danger of elimination – and it was Flo the judges decided to send home.
“I’ve met some lovely people and I’ll remember that the rest of my life,” she commented.
Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8.00pm on Channel 4, with a first for the show – caramel week.
