Strictly Come Dancing 2017's Aston Merrygold says he has 'no training' and rates his dancing a 2 out of 10.
The X Factor finalist, who was runner up in the 2008 series as part of JLS, has dismissed the suggestion he has an advantage over his rivals.
He said: "As much as everyone thinks 'oh you can dance you’re fine, I’ve seen you dance in JLS' but I have no idea about this. The same way someone else who might not have any dance experience will have to learn as well, we’re all in the same boat!"
"This is a totally different ball game," Aston quipped, "This type of dancing, I’d be a 2 or 3. It sounds really silly but it’s little stuff, the other day I found out that the waltz counts in threes and every routine I’ve ever done in my life you count in fours to eights.
"I said: 'what do you mean 3?!' To me that is alien. I’ve never done a class, I’ve never gone to college and I’ve never trained. I used to just watch Usher, Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake videos and teach myself and enjoy it, then a hobby became a career. This whole style of movement is completely alien so I’m starting again."
As for why Aston signed up for the show, he explained: "Besides being a fan of the show it’s a very big deal in my household - my mum, my nan they’re big fans! I got asked to do the show once before and I couldn’t do it because I was away in another country and then the opportunity came back up and I was like - "definitely!"
"It’s one of the biggest TV shows on a Saturday night so why not? At first I wasn’t looking forward to the outfits but now I think, "OK, I’ve been to the gym a bit, watch what you eat." I love the performance aspect of any part of being on the stage.
As for his ideal pro partner, Aston joked: "The shortest? I say that but even when the heels are on they are tall! I’ve got my Cuban heels so I’ll be alright. In terms of the professionals on this show they’re exceptional and I’m lucky enough to be on it, as long as I’m not being towered over!
Strictly Come Dancing 2017 starts Saturday night on BBC One.
