Love Island 2017 has become ITV2's joint most watched show of all time.

The final episode of the third series averaged 3.1 million viewers, the highest rating ever for the revived series which first aired in 2015.

And it's also become ITV2's joint most watched show of all time, alongside a 2011 episode of Celebrity Juice which also had 3.1 million viewers.

However in truth it's likely to have been watched by many more viewers.

The official rating numbers only include those who watched and caught up on TV, so it excludes those who watched or caught up online.

Overall the third series of the new Love Island averaged just under 3 million viewers based on official consolidated 7 day ratings, up over a million viewers year-on-year.

ITV2's most watched TV shows of all time

1. Celebrity Juice (2011) - 3.1 million / Love Island (2017) - 3.1 million
2. Bionic Woman (2008) - 3 million

4. Britain’s Got More Talent (2009) - 2.7 million
5. Peter Andre: Going It Alone (2009) - 2.3 million

With the numbers its no shock that ITV immediately commissioned a fourth series for next summer in 2018.

Head of Digital Channels & Acquisitions Paul Mortimer said: “At ITV2, we couldn't be more thrilled with how Love Island fever has gripped the nation. Now established as the perfect series to start the summer, we’re delighted to be bringing the show back for our young adult audience in 2018.”
