The games, being held in London, averaged 5.2 million between 7PM and 10PM on BBC one, peaking with 7.5 million.
Up against the stiff competition, Coronation Street managed 5.8 million viewers and 5.1 million for its two episodes on ITV, while Emmerdale had 5.2 million
In-between the soaps, The Secret World of Posh Pets had 2.8 million while a Benidorm repeat averaged 1.8 million.
The latest Celebrity Big Brother 2017 highlights dipped to 1.2 million viewers in the 9PM hour against the Athletics.
The new series of the Channel 5 show had launched to its lowest numbers ever earlier in the week but figures for the first highlights were up on last summer.
Last night's rating was down on the 1.5 million for the equivalent episode of 2016 and 400,000 below the first Friday highlights of that year but on a par of 2015's summer show.
Elsewhere in yesterdays ratings and in the afternoon tea time quiz slot, Cash Trapped continued with 1.8 million viewers on ITV losing out to Pointless on BBC One with 2.5 million.
