The new series of Britain's Got Talent kicked off with 9 million viewers on ITV last night.

An average audience of 8.7 million tuned in to the opening episode of series 11, peaking with a high of 9.7 million.

Although comfortably topping the night with almost twice as many viewers as any other show, it was actually BGT's lowest launch figure in a decade.

The number is down 300,000 on last year and 2 million below 2014's most watched launch.

In fact, only the first series in 2007 started with fewer viewers.
