Gary Barlow has hit out at claims the Let It Shine winners will take a back seat in Take That's The Band musical.

In BBC One's talent show Let It Shine, five guys were cast in the roles of a new musical called The Band based on the music of Take That.

Gary Barlow always said that the musical was not about Take That itself but it turns out it's not actually about any band at all.

In fact, the new musical focuses on five teenage girls who are fans of the group.

Five To Five

Some viewers have been left surprised by the news, suggesting that the Let It Shine boys will be little more than backing singers.

"Background singers? It’s not the same is it? #LetItShine should have been about getting the five girl leads," one viewer claimed.

However Gary has hit out at the idea the boys will have a background role.

"Utter rubbish," he wrote on Twitter about the reports.

The BBC have also insisted that the boys would still be "front and centre" despite the plot.

A spokesperson told the Metro newspaper: "With Let it Shine we always said we were casting for a band to appear in a musical based on the music of Take That and they had to be able to sing and dance – like a boyband.

"The winners will sing and dance to 14 Take That numbers in Gary’s musical. We never said we were casting actors. But they will be front and centre of the musical."

The Band Musical will tour the country from September 2017 and finish its opening twelve month run in July 2018, with dates across England, Wales and Scotland.

Tickets go on sale from 3 April 2017 at 12PM from the Band Musical's website here.
