Ricki Lake is the guest judge for tonight's Let It Shine live show and Simon Cowell she is not.

BBC One previously announced that the American actress, singer and Emmy Award-winning television presenter will join Gary Barlow, Martin Kemp and Dannii Minogue as a guest judge for the first live show this evening.

Ricki said: “I am super excited to be a guest judge on Let it Shine! I love musicals and this is a fantastic show. I was only 18 when I won the role of the original Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray so I can’t wait to share some of my own experiences with the boys.

"It is truly a pleasure and I’m excited to see the bands perform live for the first time! And not to mention, I am thrilled to be back in the UK!”

Ricki is best known for starring as the original Tracy Turnblad in the cult-classic film Hairspray and for presenting her award-winning day time talk show which was aired internationally for many years.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper ahead of tonight's live show, Ricki promised to be 'nice' to the boys as they perform live for the first time this evening.

"My tone is never going to be like Simon Cowell’s," she said. “I want them to know it’s not the end of the road for them and hopefully the opportunity will open tons of doors for them. It’s all a learning experience.”

Ricki - who will help pick which of the boys in the bottom two go through to next weekend - continued: “I want to encourage the contestants. Even the ones who we don’t put through.

“I was so pleased when the producers reached out to me," she added. "I’ve been watching the show avidly every week in LA and I love it.”

Let It Shine airs tonight at 6:55PM on BBC One with the performances and then returns with the results at 8:45PM.
