Stars of ITV soap Coronation Street have reportedly been banned from joining the Strictly Come Dancing cast.

While former cast members have taken to the Strictly dancefloor, those currently on the show are 'not allowed' to take part.

Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald on Corrie, revealed the rule in a chat on ITV's This Morning this week.

After This Morning host Ruth Langsford was confirmed for this year's Strictly, Beverley said: "I'm so jealous you're doing Strictly, I will vote for you I promise."

Ruth then asked if she would ever want to take part in the BBC series but Beverley let slip: "They won't let us, that's the only reality show I would do. I am very jealous."

She then quipped: "But I want a free ticket please, I'll come and scream for you Ruth."

It's not the first time there's been claims of a 'ban' on Corrie stars appearing on Strictly.

Back in 2012 it was suggested that Michelle Keegan had been blocked by ITV from appearing on the series when she was still a part of the Corrie cast.

"It’s a no-brainer for us," a source claimed at the time. “Why would we allow cast members time off to go to film a show for a rival channel?”

And in 2015 Antony Cotton - who plays Sean Tully - was also linked to the line up but did not appear.

"It really would be ground breaking for an active Corrie artist to take part in Strictly," an insider said at the time.

A spokesperson for ITV denied there was any explicit ban in place.

"Our cast are not banned from appearing on BBC shows, but wherever possible we try and favour ITV shows," they commented on the previous reports.
