Strictly judge Alesha Dixon defends 'entertaining' Ann Widdecombe

Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon has defended Ann Widdecombe's presence on the programme - saying she's entertaining and this year's token "novelty dancer". Chatting earlier in the week amongst growing criticism of Ann, who scored just 13 points last weekend, Alesha said the show was about an individual's progress.

Alesha told Metro: "With Strictly, there's always some sort of novelty dancer.

"The year I was a contestant it was Kate Garraway, then it was John Sergeant. There are always one or two dancers who are entertaining."

She added: "It's not about competing in the ballroom world championships - it’s about seeing people progress."

Despite another low score on last night's programme, Ann is still one of the favourites to get a place in this year's final.
