Former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik is hoping his appearance on this year's series of I'm A Celebrity will help his former party. Opik, who lost his seat in Montgomeryshire during this year's general election in the summer, is also hoping the programme won't hurt his future political career.
He told The Sun: "I think he has a pretty good idea I was going to do it. He will probably regard this as a contribution to the profile of the Lib Dems.
"I hope this show does affect my future political career. People will at least be able to vote for me from a position of information. I'm A Celebrity is a very honest programme. The public can judge me on who I am. I am worried about what the jungle is going to be like - but I am not worried about being seen in a stressful environment.
"Politics is stressful."
He added: "The public don't have to like me but at least they will know me," joking: "It would be great to win the show as it would be the first election I have won in five years! Maybe I will get lucky."
I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here starts tomorrow at 9PM on ITV1.
