Two dramatic World Cup games dominated the Sunday night TV ratings yesterday (July 1).
Both of the latest knockout games went to penalties, resulting in huge viewing figures.
On BBC One, hosts Russia's triumph over Spain was seen by an average audience of 6.6 million in the afternoon with a peak of 11 million viewers.
On ITV, the evening game between Croatia and Denmark averaged 7.6 million with a peak audience of 11.2 million.
The overrun of both matches prompted some schedule changes with shows including Holiday Horrors and Pointless Celebrities getting dropped.
In the evening on BBC One, Countryfile held 3.6 million viewers while Poldark managed 4 million against the football on ITV.
On ITV2, despite an unplanned clash with the football, Love Island managed to record a new series high.
An average audience of 3.2 million viewers tuned in for the latest episode, setting a brand new viewing figure record not only for the show but also ITV2.
The figure was up 300,000 viewers on Friday's instalment and the numbers could go bigger for tonight's dramatic recoupling episode.
Straight after, Caroline Flack hosted spin-off episode Aftersun averaged 1.5 million viewers from 10PM.
