Monday's instalment of the ITV soap saw the emotional final scenes of Shayne Ward's character Aidan, who left after three years on the cobbles.
And it was a heartbreaking departure, with Aidan taking his own life in a suicide storyline.
Shayne's final scenes as Aidan aired to 6 million viewers for both episodes on the Bank Holiday Monday.
The aftermath of his death last night saw 7.1 million tune in for a special hour-long episode, up 800,000 viewers on last week's equivalent showings.
5.7 million watched Emmerdale (up 200,000 on last week) while elsewhere on ITV, new documentary series Britain's Busiest Airport continued with 3 million (down 300,000).
At 9PM, Who Wants to be a Millionaire continued with 3.7 million viewers, dropping 200,000 on the past few days but overall still holding up well.
Jeremy Clarkson is the unlikely new host of a special week of brand new episodes, which continue at 9PM this evening on ITV.
Over on BBC One, Watchdog was the most watched TV show with 3.1 million viewers. 2.7 million watched The One Show while 2.8 million tuned in for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Britain's Fat Fight.
Elsewhere, on Channel 4, the latest episode of First Dates interested 1.5 million viewers.
On Channel 5, Rich House, Poor House had 1.3 million while Love in the Countryside brought in 1.1 million to BBC Two.
