BBC One’s Bodyguard was the most watched show on TV on Sunday night, upping its numbers week-on-week.

Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the fictional story of David Budd (Richard Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch (RaSP), assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes).

The new series launched last month to 6.7 million viewers – a number which it matched last week. Last night’s latest instalment rose to 7 million viewers.

It was revealed last week that over 10 million have now caught up with the opener, making it the biggest watched new drama in the UK in more than a decade.

Over on ITV in the 9PM slot, Vanity Fair slid from last weekend against the competition.

Earlier, episode two of The X Factor achieved 5 million viewers, matching last weekend and up 400,000 on Saturday’s episode. However, the current series remains down on last year’s run by around a million viewers.

This year has seen another huge revamp to the series with Simon Cowell joined by new judges Robbie Williams, Ayda Williams and Louis Tomlinson.

The first episode of the series rose to 7.2 million viewers in consolidated figures out today, a rise of 1.6 million on the overnight figure.

Auditions – being held at the arenas once again – will continue both next Saturday and Sunday night on ITV.

On Channel 4, 1.7 million viewers tuned in the start of the Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.
