New X Factor judge Gary Barlow has said that he loves his new job on the UK's biggest TV show, describing the role as "tough", but saying he was enjoying the challenge. Speaking on the red carpet at yesterday's press launch for the new series, Gary added that the new panel had improved the show.
In a line that's sure to sting the likes of Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue, Gary said: "It's a big change for the show. It's a new generation. I think it's taken the show to a new level.
"We're all in the charts, we're all playing gigs at the moment. If I was a contestant I'd want to be performing in front of us."
Talking to Newsbeat outside London's O2 Arena, Gary described the job as "quite incredible", adding: "Actually I've always watched this show. I never dreamed that I would be a judge one day, but I've enjoyed it immensely.
"It's been a big challenge and I think that's why I'm here. It's a new challenge, I've never done anything like this before and it's tough."
Gary said earlier this week that The X Factor bosses couldn't have picked a better line up to replace the likes of Simon Cowell.
"I suppose in terms of who they could have picked to be new judges alongside Louis, there’s no-one more valid than me, Kelly and Tulisa," Gary explained. "We’re out there doing it right now, we’re selling tickets, selling records, and we’re out there doing what these guys want to be doing."
He added: "I just want to be here to help people and I want them to be able to look up to me and be able to say to me, ‘Tell me, do I do this or this?’"
But asked if he was going to be the 'new Simon Cowell', Gary replied: "I don't know, people are going to make their own minds up, I'm just trying to be honest."
