One Direction's advice to this year's X Factor hopefuls is rather simply: Be yourself, have fun and - in a perhaps subtle dig at some of last year's finalists - don't be a diva! The five boys, who will release their debut single next month, said that being nice was the key to success.
The group, who were formed by the judges at last year's bootcamp, went on to finish third on the show and were quickly signed by Simon Cowell.
Speaking to the official ITV1 website this week, Harry advised this year's wannabe popstars: "Don’t be phoney! Be yourself and don't pretend be something you’re not. The public will see right through it."
Louis added: "Switch your songs up and don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. And dress to impress. STANDARD!
While Niall chipped in: "Make sure you relax and enjoy it – don’t let nerves kill all the fun. And don’t be a diva - be nice to everyone who helps you as it's highly likely you'll meet them again further down the line."
Meanwhile the group also revealed the strangest gifts they’ve received from their thousands of screaming teenage fans.
Zayn, who last month split from fellow X Factor finalist Rebecca Ferguson, revealed: "I got sent a mankini – I fully intend on wearing it when I next go swimming!"
Liam said: "Ha ha – we all got sent portabella mushrooms with our faces painted on them!" while Harry explained one fan had made a big error with their gift to him, saying: "I get sent olives for some strange reason and I HATE OLIVES!"
Niall added: Actually the weirdest thing I’ve ever received is from Louis. He thoughtfully bought me a mug that had a photo of me on the toilet across it. You have to pour in hot water in it for the image to appear. Err, thanks mate!"
'What Makes You Beautiful' is out on September 11.
