One Direction say they rejected Simon Cowell's suggestions for their debut single

One Direction have revealed they stood up Simon Cowell and rejected tracks he suggesed they should've released. Speaking to the Daily Mirror today, One Direction told how Simon had suggested records that were far too old for the teenagers to perform!

“Some of the lyrics were about 40-year-old men pouring their hearts out,” Harry Styles said.

Louis Tomlinson added: “We said ‘no’ to Simon over at least one song. But he’d much prefer us to be honest. Despite what people think, he doesn’t want to be surrounded by lots of ‘yes’ men.

“We get quite a lot of freedom and a say in what we do. Once we found our sound, we told Simon we wanted to keep it really young.”

One Direction's debut single, What Makes You Beautiful, premiered today and the boys will release the track - a mix between Busted and Grease's Summer Nights - next month.

“Simon wants us to put a stamp on our music in our own way, so he appreciates our input," Louis added.

Meanwhile the guys revealed what the music mogul was really like to work with!

“Simon is hilarious," Zayn explained, "At X Factor, behind the curtains just before we came on, he’d talk non-stop about football and girls.

“He’s a massive Man United fan, you wouldn’t believe it! He’s just one of the lads really.”

Liam Payne added: “When the Black Eyed Peas were on, he wanted us to see who could pull Fergie. We have such a laugh with him.”
