One Direction's Zayn Malik has opened up for the first time about his split from fellow X Factor finalist Rebecca Ferguson. Speaking to the Daily Mirror today, Zayn said he wasn't upset by the separation, insisting that it was a mutual decision between the pair.
The couple got together on The X Factor live tour earlier this year, but only went public with their relationship in May, with Rebecca saying she was 'genuinely in love' with the 18-year-old.
"He was after me for months. I was like: ‘No, you’re too young'," Rebecca said at the time. “But he really wooed me and it was a long, long struggle before anything happened.”
Despite claims that One Direction had been told to dump their girl friends - with Liam Payne getting rid of long-term girlfriend Hannah Walker last month - Zayn made it clear it was his and Rebecca's decision.
Zayn said today: “I got told at the beginning of my career it’s quite hard to hold on to a relationship and realised halfway through the relationship that it was hard.
“We both mutually decided.
“Am I sad? We’re just getting on with it and doing our own thing. We’re still friends though. The band are there to help me through it. We’re five mates. We talk about everything.”
He added that: "Louis is the agony uncle”.
One Direction release their debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful' next month.
