Those new hidden cameras on The X Factor 2011 are really paying off. First they caught some light fingered singers off guard and today it's reported the secret filming has result in the axe of two contestants - after they were seen snorting cocaine backstage in the dressing rooms.
According to The Sun, the hidden manned cameras - installed as part of this year's "Big Brother overhaul" of the format - caught the acts as they waited to perform for judges Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh in Liverpool.
The cameras had been installed to simply capture 'amusing' moments and to caught the auditionees off-guard, such as filming warm up routines or good luck rituals.
"This was jaw-dropping stuff. No one knew what to do," the source said.
X Factor execs Mark Sidaway and Cat Lawson immediately booted the pair off of the show, but did not call the police.
The source added: "This is pretty devious but the singers are mostly here for their five minutes of fame."
The X Factor said in a statement: "This was an isolated incident. The contestants involved were asked to leave immediately and did not perform before the judges.
"Contestants are made aware when cameras are filming them."
We told last month how new X Factor bosses wanted to turn the show into a ‘new Big Brother’ with cameras following the contestants every step of their journey. We’re exposing everything,” a source said previously. “The contestants know they are being filmed at all times but by putting the cameras out of sight they might drop their guard.”
