Cheryl Cole's mobile phone 'hacked' while she was being treated for malaria

Cheryl Cole's mobile phone was hacked as she was being treated for malaria last year, it has been claimed. According to the Daily Star today, the Geordie singer's agents fear that Chezza may have been one of hundreds of celebs whose voicemail was 'hacked' into by News Of The World journalists.

The tabloid claims they are worried Cheryl was "targeted after she collapsed with the deadly disease while filming hit show The X Factor last year."

Current victims of the phone hacking scandal range from other celebrities to MPs, as well as the victims of crimes and their families, including murdered child Milly Dowler.

The scandal, which started earlier this year, has already forced the Sunday tabloid to close down and could well enough its parent company, News international, and sister newspaper The Sun.

At the time of the alleged hacking, Chezza was seriously ill in hospital after catching malaria while on a holiday with then boyfriend Derek Hough to Tanzania. According to reports at the time, which now may have come from hacked voicemail messages, Cheryl was given just 24 hours to live by doctors at the worst point.

The illness also came as Cheryl's divorce from footie husband Ashley Cole started to go through the courts, having split from the Chelsea defender earlier in February following more allegations of affairs.

Someone claiming to be a former journalist for the paper, revealing details of what went on behind the scenes, said that Cheryl's phone was targeted “while she underwent treatment for malaria” - but they did not reveal the culprits.

While Cheryl's reps declined to a comment official, a source told the newspaper they were looking into the allegations made.

A rep for News Of The World also refused to comment on the claims.
