Simon Cowell has reportedly admitted to 'feeling guilty' over Cheryl Cole's sacking from the panel on The US X Factor by network executives at FOX. The Sun claims that the music mogul 'did everything in his power' to make the Girls Aloud star famous in the states but insisted his "hands were tied"

Simon reportedly said: "I feel guilty. I'm sorry it didn't work out."

FOX executives were left unimpressed by the Geordie singer on the show and pushed for her to be removed from the panel. It is expected that Cheryl will be replaced by the show's co-host Nicole Scherzinger.

"[Simon] loves Cheryl and did everything in his power to get her on US TV," an 'American source' told the tabloid today. "But channel chiefs just weren't happy. It was a necessary evil and he feels terribly guilty about it.

"He knew he'd get a slap in the face from her for all of this - and he certainly got one. But he doesn't want any bad blood."

Meanwhile things look set to get awkward for Cheryl Cole, with Nicole performing here in the UK for Simon Cowell on the Britain's Got Talent finals next week. With both Simon and Nicole yet to say a word about the stories, it looks like they'll be some probing questions by Stephen Mulhern on Britain's Got More Talent.

"I'll be chatting to [Simon] on my show on Monday night - and we haven't been told we can't talk about The X Factor," Stephen said. "We've got a surprise for him - but it won't be Cheryl Cole."

A source added: "This will be the first time Simon and Nicole have been seen together since the news she was replacing Cheryl. It is likely to be uncomfortable viewing for Cheryl."

The X Factor 2011 UK auditions start on June 1 in Birmingham.
