Doctor Who Actress Elisabeth Sladen dies, aged just 63

We bring you the very sad news that Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures actress Elisabeth Sladen has died, aged just 63. The actress who played Sarah Jane Smith in both series apparently died earlier today, of reported cancer.

Sladen was a sidekick to both Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker between 1973 and 1976,  lasting for three and a half seasons returning throughout the 80's and 90's for guest appearances.  She then returned to the popular sci-fi series in 2006 for a special episode entitled ''School Reunion'' which also featured her faithful robot dog sidekick K9.

The actress' popularity grew with many young fans loving Sarah Jane prompting show producer Russell T. Davies to write a new series for CBBC entitled The Sarah Jane Adventures. The show gained a cult following from young people to big kids alike and a fifth series was scheduled to air in 2011.

Whilst reports of cancer are yet to be confirmed, Doctor Who Magazine have tweeted confirming the news saying: ''With great sadness, DWM must report the loss of our beloved Sarah Jane, actress Elisabeth Sladen. The best of best friends. Too, too sad.''

Doctor Who writer Paul Cornell said: "Very sorry to hear about Elisabeth Sladen, a great actor, special to everyone of my generation and a whole new one."

Also in mourning is Sarah Jane Adventures creator and former Doctor Who Lead Writer Russell T Davies who said: "I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis."

Current Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffatt added: "'Never meet your heroes' wise people say. They weren't thinking of Lis Sladen. Sarah Jane Smith was everybody's hero when I was younger, and as brave and funny and brilliant as people only ever are in stories.

The clearly shellshocked head writer continued: "But many years later, when I met the real Sarah-Jane - Lis Sladen herself - she was exactly as any child ever have wanted her to be. Kind and gentle and clever; and a ferociously talented actress, of course, but in that perfectly English unassuming way."

Elisabeth leaves behind her husband, fellow actor  Brian Miller, and their daughter Sadie. Post all your tributes to the legendary actress here at this sad sad time!
