Channel 4 has confirmed reports that it will be broadcasting a special one-off Christmas edition of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings later this year. Boss of factual telly at the channel Liam Humphreys said today the broadcaster is also in the process of discussing other ideas and possible spin-offs to the brand.
"Big Fat Gypsy Weddings was a huge ratings success and we're currently discussing a number of ideas going forward," he told the Guardian. "We also have a one-off Christmas special planned, which has already been filmed. We're obviously delighted that the programme has resonated with viewers so much."
The paper also quotes a "senior executive" at the corporation as saying: "Of course, with 8 million people tuning in we would be stupid if we said 'that was it' and we will not be doing anything more on the subject.
"It hasn't just been a success, it's been an astonishing success. No documentaries, not even ones on BBC1 or ITV1, get more than 8 million these days."
A source added: "Future programmes may involve the people from the series, it may be other Travellers, but Channel 4 will definitely be doing more programmes on this subject."
My Big Fat Gypsy Christmas will air on Channel 4 later this year.
