ITV is working on a UK version of Jennifer Lopez’s hit show World Of Dance
Mixed-style dance contest set to go global after proving a hit in the USITV is reportedly set to commission a UK version of Jennifer Lopez’s smash hit US talent competition World Of Dance.
A partnership with the California-based dance brand of the same name, World Of Dance debuted on America’s NBC network in May.
It allows dance acts of any age and style to show off their moves in the hope of winning a $1million prize.
Contestants are separated in to three divisions: ‘Junior’ (acts of any size up to 17 years old), ‘Upper’ (acts aged 18+ with up to four members), and ‘Team’ (acts aged 18+ with five or more members).
The judges assess their routines across five areas – Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity and Presentation – and provide a score of up to 20 points for each.
These scores are then combined for totals out of 100 points, which determine whether or not the contestant progresses in the contest.
Acts compete in their own divisions until the grand final, when the winners from the three groups go head-to-head to be crowned the overall champion.
The US version is hosted by Jenna Dewan Tatum, and features Lopez, Ne-Yo and Derek Hough on its judging panel. The ‘On The Floor’ singer also acts as an executive producer.
Its first season was an instant hit, averaging around 8million viewers in the tough summer period – and now World Of Dance looks set to go global.
Broadcast magazine reports that ITV is working with NBC-owned production company Monkey Kingdom to develop the show for the UK.
Bosses are apparently ‘on the brink’ of ordering a series, but ITV is staying tight-lipped for now, declining to comment.
According to Variety, NBC recently held a showcase for the World Of Dance format in Los Angeles, attended by several international TV executives.
“We know when we have those people in the room the international roll out is going to be phenomenal,” said NBC’s Ana Langenberg.
There hasn’t been a major mixed-style dance contest on TV since Sky 1 axed Got To Dance in 2014 after five successful series.
A UK version of So You Think You Can Dance also aired on BBC One in 2010 and 2011.
