A new BBC detective drama has started filming, and this one has a hook that should pull us in before the first case even begins.
The Detection Club will follow Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and G.K. Chesterton as they step out from behind the page and into their own real crime cases.
The 10-part drama is set in 1930s London, where the famous writers meet inside a secret city spot and soon find themselves pulled into a case that changes the game.
Bryony Hannah will play Agatha Christie, Miles Jupp will play G.K. Chesterton, and Cara Theobold will play Dorothy L. Sayers, with Viraj Juneja joining as D.I. Greenway.
We also know the show comes from Kit Lambert, whose past work includes Father Brown and Whitstable Pearl, so this feels like one for us cosy crime fans to keep an eye on.
The set-up sounds simple in the best way, as three writers who helped shape the detective tale now have to use their own minds on cases outside their books.
Bryony Hannah said: “Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time; and yet I knew very little about the woman behind the pen. The Detection Club gives us a chance to meet Agatha in a whole new light. I’m so looking forward to exploring her wit, intellect and flaws with such a fab team.”
The drama also brings in a young police officer who is keen to prove himself, though it sounds like the writers may make his job both easier and much harder.
BBC and BritBox are backing the series, with filming taking place across the West Midlands as part of the BBC’s push to make more new shows in the area.
